Course Overview

Communication is a skill that software engineers often underestimate in terms of importance, and being good at it is effectively a senior engineer requirement. In this series, you will learn how to:

  • Earn trust quickly and make people like you fast
  • Resolve disagreements
  • Make it easy for others to understand and resonate with you
  • Be a friendly, visible, and high-performing presence on any team (both remote and in-person)
Meet Alex Chiou

Alex Chiou is a proven Silicon Valley engineer with 10 years of experience across top tech companies PayPal, Course Hero (now Learneo, a $3.6B unicorn), Meta, and Robinhood. With just 1 year of experience, he became a tech lead building Course Hero's Android app from scratch and growing the Android team from himself to 4 engineers. At Meta and Robinhood, he continued being a high-performing tech lead, driving teams of 15+ engineers.

This was a very informative and frankly delightful course. The focus on creating positive energy and leading with empathy as a framework for these tactics was a breath of fresh air.

I can already see areas where I can immediately apply this advice and benefits when I've used these tactics in the past (e.g. using my manager as a "people API" for feedback).

Thanks, Alex!

This series alone is well worth the cost of joining Taro! I've learned many of these lessons the hard way.

This course was very insightful and helped me become a better communicator in my new job. I learned that empathy and putting yourself in others shoes can help make you more effective as an engineer and an all-round better human.

Thanks so much for the course Alex! It was really, really insightful. I think I have really underestimated just how valuable good communication is, but getting my first job out of university has illuminated that. What I love is how this advice applies not only to one's career, but to every part of life involving other humans!

I really am hoping to implement some of this advice in concrete scenarios and to match energy and build positive energy with people. I've had a lot of the ideas articulated in this series but haven't been sure how to articulate them.

Thanks again Alex!

Most of the effective mentorship I've received over the course of my career, summarized succinctly and packaged into engaging video format. Alex is the mentor I wish I had!
