Description For Optical Engineering Intern

10x Genomics is seeking an ambitious and self-motivated optical engineering intern to join their hardware engineering department for Summer 2025. This 12-week internship is based at their headquarters in Pleasanton, CA, where you'll work on cutting-edge research projects within the hardware engineering group.

The hardware engineering team is responsible for designing, building, and testing 10x's consumer and internal instruments, from R&D prototypes to manufacturing pilot builds. They've recently launched successful products like CytAssist and the industry-leading Xenium Analyzer. As an intern, you'll be involved in hands-on work with optical prototypes, data acquisition, and analysis.

The ideal candidate should be comfortable with both practical lab work and technical analysis, combining mechanical skills with optical expertise. This position is perfect for rising senior undergraduates or graduate students with 1+ years of experience who want to experience life in industry. You'll work with state-of-the-art equipment and contribute to meaningful projects in biotechnology.

Responsibilities For Optical Engineering Intern

  • Assembling optical prototypes using CAD and off-the-shelf parts
  • Developing data acquisition routines including control of mechanical, fluidics, and optical devices
  • Analyzing collected data: spectra, signal and images
  • Troubleshooting issues like misalignment, contamination, and leaks

Requirements For Optical Engineering Intern

Python
  • Completed second year of college with at least one optics course with a lab component (for undergraduates)
  • Work in a lab with optics and/or instrumentation focus (for graduate students)
  • Basic knowledge of optical principles and concepts
  • Hands-on experience with optical components and laboratory equipment
  • Experience with alignment of basic optical assemblies
  • Proficiency in Python or similar tools for automated control and data processing
