Description For Senior Optical Manufacturing Engineer, Project Kuiper

Project Kuiper is Amazon's ambitious initiative to launch a constellation of 3,236 satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO) to provide fast, affordable broadband to unserved and underserved communities worldwide. As a Senior Optical Manufacturing Engineer, you'll lead the Optical Head Assembly production development, playing a crucial role in spacecraft manufacturing. You'll manage a team of 4-6 manufacturing engineers, working directly on the shop floor and collaborating with multiple teams. The role combines hands-on technical leadership with strategic planning, requiring expertise in optical systems, manufacturing processes, and team management. You'll be responsible for developing production processes, solving complex technical challenges, and scaling production capacity while maintaining exceptional quality standards. The position offers competitive compensation ranging from $128,600 to $213,600 based on location, plus equity and comprehensive benefits. Responsibilities For Senior Optical Manufacturing Engineer, Project Kuiper

  • Lead Optical Head Assembly production development
  • Conceptualize, design, develop, and improve production processes
  • Serve as primary technical interface to development team
  • Support operations team in high pressure escalation moments
  • Own the capacity increase roadmap for production
  • Mentor and lead a team of 4-6 manufacturing engineers
  • Work on shop floor with production teams
  • Perform production development testing

Requirements For Senior Optical Manufacturing Engineer, Project Kuiper

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, or Optics/Optical Sciences
  • Experience in developing functional specifications, design verification plans and functional test procedures
  • Demonstrated experience with Opto-mechanical systems
  • Exposure to Space Flight Hardware Production
  • Familiarity with Low-Rate Manufacturing Environments & New Product Introduction
  • Knowledge of Lean manufacturing practices & principles
  • Experience with Root Cause Analysis Techniques
