Description For ESD Engineer

Apple, a global leader in technology innovation, is seeking an ESD Engineer to join their Hardware team in Irvine, California. This highly visible role offers an exciting opportunity to work on cutting-edge silicon design and ESD protection for Apple's diverse product lineup.

The position involves taking ownership of ESD and Latch-Up requirements for all ICs developed by and for Apple. You'll be responsible for ensuring silicon designs meet Apple's exacting ESD specifications and manufacturing requirements. This role requires close collaboration with various internal teams and external vendors, combining technical expertise with strong communication skills.

As an ESD Engineer, you'll be involved in defining methodologies, designing protection devices, developing test structures, and managing sign-off reviews. The role offers a comprehensive compensation package, including a competitive base salary range of $135,400 to $250,600, plus additional benefits such as stock options, medical coverage, and educational support.

The ideal candidate brings at least 3 years of relevant industry experience, deep understanding of transistor device characteristics, and expertise in ESD circuit design techniques. You should be familiar with various testing models (HBM, CDM, MM, IEC-61000-4-2) and have hands-on experience with design/layout EDA tools.

Responsibilities For ESD Engineer

  • Define the ESD methodology for all silicon developed by Apple and specify chip and IP level ESD requirements
  • Design ESD protection devices and circuits to meet design requirements
  • Develop test structures to characterize Si for ESD/LUP properties
  • Develop design rules based on Si characterization data
  • Collaborate with foundry on ESD library and ESD/LUP rule development activities
  • Maintain an ESD device library to support internal and external design teams
  • Generate or review ESD/LUP testing plans for Apple and vendor ICs
  • Manage the sign-off reviews with internal design teams, external vendors and foundries
  • Drive ESD/LUP related debug activities

Requirements For ESD Engineer

  • BS and 3+ years relevant industry experience
  • Deep understanding of transistor device characteristics
  • Solid understanding of models used for testing ESD, including HBM, CDM, MM and IEC-61000-4-2
  • Knowledge of state-of-the-art ESD circuit design techniques and topologies
  • Hands-on experience with design/layout EDA tools, including Virtuoso, Calibre, Allegro
  • Knowledge of ESD checking tools like PERC and Pathfinder
  • Experience with Si processes used for high voltage, RF, or advanced ASICs
  • Experience with ESD/LUP test and characterization equipment
  • Strong initiative, collaboration, and ownership of responsibilities
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
