Description For Haptics Product Design Engineer

The Haptic Engineering team at Apple develops innovative haptic solutions central to products like iPhone and Apple Watch. We're seeking a Product Design / Mechanical Design Engineer to lead the design, development, and validation of next-generation haptic actuators and experiences. You'll have end-to-end responsibility for mechanical design and integration of haptic actuators from concept to production.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Brainstorming concepts and solutions to haptic challenges
  • Prototyping, evaluating, and debugging innovative ideas
  • Designing mechanical components and assembly schemes
  • Generating detailed specifications and drawings
  • Analyzing static and dynamic structures
  • Developing new manufacturing processes with vendors
  • Validating designs through multiple iterations
  • Conducting failure analysis and design of experiments
  • Generating new intellectual property

You'll collaborate with multi-functional teams, Industrial Design, and system engineering groups. The role involves designing for manufacturability, communicating across teams, managing priorities, and leading design reviews.

Responsibilities For Haptics Product Design Engineer

  • Lead the design, development, and validation of next-generation haptic actuators and experiences
  • Have end-to-end responsibility for mechanical design and integration of haptic actuators from concept to production
  • Brainstorm concepts and solutions to haptic related challenges
  • Prototype, evaluate, and debug innovative ideas
  • Design and define mechanical components and assembly schemes
  • Generate detailed specifications and drawings
  • Analyze static and dynamic structures to quantify fundamental device performance
  • Participate in the development of new manufacturing and assembly processes with external vendors
  • Validate and characterize designs through multiple iterations
  • Conduct failure analysis and design of experiments (DOEs) to resolve root cause and implement corrective actions
  • Generate new intellectual property
  • Collaborate with Industrial Design and system engineering groups
  • Design for manufacturability with cross-functional teams
  • Communicate multi-functionally and throughout management structure
  • Manage and track multiple priorities within schedule requirements
  • Lead design reviews and design documentation releases

Requirements For Haptics Product Design Engineer

  • BS and a minimum of 10 years relevant industry experience
  • Experience with 3D CAD, 2D drafting, GD&T, and tolerance analysis
  • Strong fundamentals in mechanics
  • Skilled at problem-solving, using tools like the scientific method, root cause analysis, and DOE creation
  • Applied knowledge of electrical circuits, material science, and basic chemistry
  • Team oriented with excellent written and verbal communication skills
