Description For Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) - Hardware Enclosures

Apple is seeking a Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) for Hardware Enclosures to join their Operations and Supply Chain team. This role represents a unique opportunity to be part of Apple's revolutionary product development process. As an MDE, you'll be responsible for driving the development of key mechanical manufacturing processes across Apple's worldwide supply base. This highly visible position requires expertise in manufacturing process development, including CNC machining, surface finishing, glass processing, assembly, and painting processes.

The role combines technical expertise with leadership, requiring you to work directly with Apple's Industrial Design, Product Design, and Manufacturing Design partners, as well as worldwide suppliers. You'll be responsible for defining and implementing best-in-class processes, developing documentation, working with Global Supply Managers, and providing on-site leadership during development and production phases.

The ideal candidate will bring 7+ years of mechanical manufacturing experience and strong educational background in mechanical, manufacturing, or industrial engineering. This position offers an attractive compensation package ranging from $151,200 to $268,500, plus additional benefits including stock options, comprehensive healthcare, and educational reimbursement.

Responsibilities For Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) - Hardware Enclosures

  • Define best-in-class processes to meet Apple design and operational requirements
  • Develop and document processes including parameters, consumables and secondary operation requirements
  • Work with Global Supply Managers to define supply chain requirements
  • Provide leadership at manufacturing sites during development and production ramp
  • Use data to drive process decisions, data analysis, DOEs, SPC
  • Identify, research, develop, and qualify equipment manufacturers and suppliers
  • Define part tolerance and specifications
  • Lead process development in areas like CNC machining, Surface Finishing, Glass Processing, Assembly, or Painting

Requirements For Manufacturing Design Engineer (MDE) - Hardware Enclosures

  • BS, MS or PhD in mechanical, manufacturing or industrial engineering
  • 7+ years of full time mechanical manufacturing experience
  • 25% domestic and international travel required
  • Hands-on mechanical ability
  • Excellent written and verbal interpersonal skills
