Description For Communications Engineer

BlackSky is seeking a Communications Engineer to join their team in Seattle, WA. This hybrid role reports to the Director of Ground and Communication Systems and is integral to the Constellation Engineering and Test teams. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in communication systems, satellite operations, and RF hardware testing.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and release design documentation for satellite systems and ground station solutions
  • Define and perform tests on satellite communication system hardware and new features
  • Develop and execute test programs to qualify new hardware and ensure compatibility between space and ground segments
  • Interface with vendors to solve technical constraints and support hardware deployment
  • Support regulatory filings and analysis for system compliance
  • Assist operational team with analysis of ground station and communication issues
  • Support ground station design, test, and deployment
  • Collaborate effectively with a multidisciplinary team
  • Manage competing priorities and individual tasks towards larger company objectives

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in a relevant engineering discipline
  • Minimum of three years technical experience, preferably in space operations
  • Understanding of key communication systems theories and techniques
  • Experience with hands-on testing of RF hardware
  • Ability to develop design documentation
  • Strong team and inter-team cooperation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced startup environment
  • Self-starter capable of managing complex projects independently
  • US Citizenship required

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with avionics and antenna installation, testing, and maintenance
  • Software writing skills for data analysis and test conduct
  • Linux familiarity
  • Knowledge of satellite systems or RF ground systems
  • RF licensing procedures knowledge
  • Regulatory experience
  • Team leadership experience
  • Ability to balance system-level thinking with detailed problem-solving
