Description For Senior Materials Engineer I

At CesiumAstro, we are developers and pioneers of out-of-the-box communication systems for satellites, UAVs, launch vehicles, and other space and airborne platforms. We are looking to add a Senior Materials Engineer I to our growing team.

In this position, you will develop into a key member of our product development team, assisting with the materials selection, qualification, failure root-cause analysis, standardization, vendor evaluations, and performance verification efforts. This position will require regular presentation of work and findings to peers, mentors, and Cesium leadership.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with design and manufacturing engineering teams
  • Characterizing and defining operating parameters for different material types
  • Executing test and qualification plans
  • Developing solder and flux processes for flight
  • Performing materials and process validation testing
  • Reviewing electrical component bill of materials
  • Performing mechanical testing of adhesives
  • Developing shop aid and tools using 3D printing
  • Assisting in troubleshooting and resolving production issues

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Materials Science, Materials Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering
  • Minimum 4 years of relevant prior experience
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities
  • Basic understanding of manufacturing processes, CAD software, and engineering principles
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

Preferred experience:

  • Master's or Ph.D. in Materials Science or a relevant field
  • Experience with PCBA/electronics assemblies, SMT methods, and electronic components
  • Familiarity with reliability analyses for space mission hardware
  • Knowledge of shielding electronics against space radiation effects
  • Experience with high-frequency RF materials technologies
