Description For Intern - Electrical Engineer/Physics - Summer 2025

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is at the forefront of commercial fusion energy development. We collaborate with MIT, combining decades of research with groundbreaking high-temperature superconducting (HTS) magnet technology. Our mission is to deploy compact fusion power plants to meet global decarbonization goals as quickly as possible.

We're seeking an Electrical Engineering or Physics Intern for Summer 2025. This 12-16 week internship offers hands-on experience in cutting-edge fusion technology. You'll work 40-50 hours per week in Devens, MA, with compensation based on your academic year.

Projects may include:

  • Developing hardware solutions for instrument integration
  • Testing and commissioning the SSRF transmitter
  • EM modeling of TF/QMC NINT coils
  • Upgrading power systems for the magnet test facility

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Hands-on experience through research, projects, or internships
  • Exceptional problem-solving skills
  • High self-motivation and ability to work in a fast-paced environment

Responsibilities For Intern - Electrical Engineer/Physics - Summer 2025

  • Develop hardware solutions (PCBAs, assembly instructions, cabinet design) for integration of instruments, signal conditioners, and digitizers
  • Aid with the 'hands on' testing and commissioning of the SSRF transmitter
  • Develop and install sensors and interface with our control system
  • EM modeling of TF/QMC NINT coils using Quanscient software and comparing to baselined COMSOL and mBS codes
  • Commissioning, testing and upgrading the power systems for the magnet test facility

Requirements For Intern - Electrical Engineer/Physics - Summer 2025

Linux
  • Currently enrolled college student (Bachelor's to PhD)
  • Hands-on experience through academic research, project teams, machine shops, hackathons, or industry internships
  • Exceptional problem-solving and troubleshooting skills
  • High self-motivation and drive to execute quickly
  • Authorization to work in the United States for any employer
