Description For Principal R&D Instrumentation and Control Engineer

Commonwealth Fusion Systems is pioneering the development of commercially viable fusion power plants. As a Principal R&D Instrumentation and Control Engineer, you'll play a crucial role in developing, testing, and delivering data acquisition and control systems for CFS magnets and SPARC components. You'll work with multidisciplinary teams, design industrial PLC equipment, implement control schemes, and develop software for various platforms. This role requires expertise in electrical engineering, hands-on lab experience, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. You'll contribute to critical company missions, mentor team members, and collaborate across departments to achieve ambitious goals in fusion energy technology.

Key Responsibilities: • Design and implement industrial PLC equipment and control systems • Develop software for data acquisition and control using LabVIEW, Ignition, and PLC programming • Create and manage system-level wiring diagrams and test stand configurations • Implement safety features, including interlocks and fault-detection • Perform data analysis focusing on integrity, quality, and reliability • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams of engineers and physicists • Lead projects and mentor team members as needed

Requirements: • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, or related field • 10+ years of integration and test engineering experience • Strong background in electronics hardware and test software • Proficiency in LabVIEW, Python, and PLC programming • Experience with industrial automation protocols and instrumentation • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced environment

Responsibilities For Principal R&D Instrumentation and Control Engineer

  • Work within multi-disciplinary team of engineers and physicists
  • Design, build, and install industrial PLC equipment
  • Research, install, and qualify sensors for subsystems and magnet products
  • Document system-level wiring diagrams and test stand configuration
  • Implement open-/closed-loop and scheduled control schemes
  • Implement system safety features including interlocks and fault-detection
  • Develop HMI/GUI software using LabVIEW or Ignition
  • Develop Real-Time software on National Instruments DAQ systems
  • Develop and build PLC programs for automated control and data capture
