Description For R&D Instrumentation and Control Engineer

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is at the forefront of fusion energy development, working to create commercially viable fusion power plants. As an R&D Instrumentation and Control Engineer at CFS, you'll play a crucial role in developing, testing, and delivering data acquisition and control systems for critical SPARC components and CFS magnets.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to create reliable instrumentation and control systems
  • Designing and implementing PLC equipment, sensors, and control schemes
  • Developing HMI/GUI software and Real-Time software for various hardware systems
  • Creating custom solutions to improve manufacturability and reliability of large magnet production test stands
  • Performing data analysis with a focus on integrity, quality, and performance improvement

The ideal candidate will have:

  • A Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics, or a related field
  • 5+ years of experience in integration and test engineering
  • Strong skills in designing, testing, and debugging electronics hardware and software
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment

Additional preferred qualifications include experience with LabVIEW, Python, PLC hardware/software, and various industrial automation protocols. You'll work in an on-site role in Devens, MA, contributing to CFS's mission of delivering clean, limitless fusion energy.

Responsibilities For R&D Instrumentation and Control Engineer

  • Work within a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and physicists
  • Design, build, and install industrial PLC equipment
  • Research, install, and qualify sensors for various subsystems and magnet products
  • Implement open-/closed-loop and scheduled control schemes
  • Develop HMI/GUI software using visual software languages like LabVIEW or Ignition
  • Develop Real-Time software running on National Instruments DAQ systems
  • Develop and build PLC programs for automated control and data capture
  • Perform data analysis focusing on data integrity, quality, and reliability

Requirements For R&D Instrumentation and Control Engineer

Python
  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering, physics or another related engineering field
  • 5+ years in an integration and test engineering role
  • 5+ years' experience designing, testing, troubleshooting, and debugging electronics hardware and test software
  • Ability to succeed in a fast-paced and dynamic engineering environment
