Description For Senior Mechanical Engineer - Assembly

Commonwealth Fusion Systems (CFS) is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer for their Assembly Team to work on the SPARC tokamak device. This role involves designing, developing, and managing the fabrication of unique tooling for the assembly and integration of the tokamak. You'll be responsible for developing overall concepts, engineering strategies, and use plans for each tool assembly, working closely with system teams to find efficient, creative, and safe ways to manipulate and integrate tokamak components.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Ownership and design of tooling, lifting, manipulation, and support frames for SPARC system components
  • Formulating assembly strategies and coordinating with system teams
  • Analyzing tool structures and kinematics for safety and adequacy
  • Developing alignment plans for precision placement of magnets and vessels
  • Overseeing tool fabrication at outside vendors
  • Creating assembly work instruction packets
  • Collaborating with other engineers, designers, and assembly personnel

The ideal candidate will have:

  • B.S. in Civil, Structural, Mechanical, or Aerospace Engineering
  • 3-5 years of Mechanical Engineering experience
  • Experience in fabrication and integration of complex, large mechanical structures
  • Familiarity with standard actuation and guidance mechanisms
  • Experience with finite element analysis and lifting operations (>10 Tons)

  • 3 to 5 years of Mechanical Engineering Experience
  • At least 3 years technical experience in fabrication and integration of complex and large mechanical structures
  • Experience with standard actuation and guidance mechanisms and tools
  • Experience with finite element analysis
  • Lifting operations experience (>10 Tons)
  • Ability to occasionally lift up to 50 lbs
  • Willingness to travel or work required nights/weekends/on-call occasionally
