Senior Staff Engineer, AI Foundations

Cruise, a pioneering self-driving service, is seeking a Senior Staff Engineer for their AI Foundations (AIF) organization. This role is crucial in building essential AI infrastructure used by every ML engineer at Cruise. The AIF team's mission is to support the AI lifecycle through ML data platforms, training platforms, and deploying complex ML models to on-vehicle hardware under tight real-time constraints.

As a Senior Staff Engineer, you'll lead the vision/strategy and tech-lead the execution to solve challenging problems related to large foundational models for autonomous driving. You'll work in a highly collaborative environment, partnering with ML teams to inspire technical strategy and drive execution through cross-functional teams.

Key responsibilities include:

• Being a strategic thought leader for AI Foundations
• Leading execution around ML systems, training infrastructure, and deploying large models
• Serving as a technical leader across Cruise AI and Engineering organizations
• Defining streamlined engineering processes with robust quality
• Contributing to data, training, and deployment strategies
• Proposing improvements for model training and evaluation
• Staying current with industry and academic developments in AI and ML Systems
• Owning technical projects from start to finish
• Managing cross-team collaborations and risks
• Participating in recruiting and mentoring activities

The ideal candidate will have:

• 5+ years of experience with ML systems for training and deploying complex ML models
• Experience with scaling challenges of large foundational models
• Strong coding skills and ability to set quality standards
• Leadership experience in driving technical strategy
• PhD in CS/CE/EE or equivalent industry experience
