Description For Staff Engineer, Performance and Capacity

As a Staff Engineer for the Capacity and Performance Engineering (CPE) Team at Cruise, you will work on improving the scalability and efficiency of Cruise's infrastructure. You'll collaborate cross-functionally with engineering and various teams to drive efficiency initiatives and develop automation tooling. Your responsibilities include working with AI, Product, and Infrastructure teams to develop cost showback structures, leading cloud efficiency discovery and execution, and shaping Cruise's future through strategic projects.

The ideal candidate should have familiarity with high-performance compute clusters, scheduler logic, and resource contention tradeoff experience. You should be able to make logic gate tradeoffs to represent efficiency targets and be comfortable investing in deep understanding to find novel, data-backed improvements.

Key responsibilities:

  • Provide deep visibility into product performance through capacity and performance experiments
  • Identify and address infrastructure and workflow efficiency gaps
  • Partner with engineering teams to resolve performance bottlenecks
  • Work with software engineers to optimize cloud resource consumption
  • Negotiate with cloud service providers for efficient scaling and capacity readiness
  • Coordinate major cross-system architecture changes
  • Present efficiency opportunities and project cost savings to executives
  • Design and lead automation efforts for short and long-term capacity planning

This role offers a competitive salary range of $175,100 - $257,500, along with bonus potential, long-term incentives, and a comprehensive benefits package. Cruise provides a flexible work policy called CruiseFlex, allowing for location-flexible work arrangements.

Responsibilities For Staff Engineer, Performance and Capacity

  • Provide deepest visibility to what is going on for all products
  • Proactively identify gaps in infrastructure efficiency and workflow efficiencies
  • Partner with engineering teams to conduct capacity and performance experiments
  • Work closely with software engineers to reduce cloud resource consumption and improve performance
  • Work with cloud service providers to negotiate and retain necessary SKUs and capabilities
  • Coordinate major changes to cross-system architectures
  • Present efficiency opportunities and project cost savings to Cruise executive team
  • Design, develop and lead automation for capacity planning

Requirements For Staff Engineer, Performance and Capacity

Python
  • Familiarity with HPC clusters and Compute Platforms
  • 8+ years experience in capacity or performance engineering role
  • 5+ years experience managing teams
  • Expert application performance experience
  • Expert knowledge of various public cloud providers
  • Expert with data modeling for public cloud
  • Expert with budgeting and capacity planning experience
  • Expert in SQL, Python, scripting, and building automation tools
  • Self-disciplined and thrives in fast-moving environment
  • Excellent communication skills
