Description For Tailings Engineer

Elk Valley Resources (EVR), a part of the Glencore Group, operates four steelmaking coal mines in British Columbia employing over 5,000 people. We're seeking a Tailings Engineer to join our team in the beautiful Elk Valley region.

Reporting to the Manager Tailings, you'll be the primary technical resource for tailings operations, deposition, and Tailings and Water Retaining Structures (TWRS). This site-based role focuses on planning, monitoring, deposit assessments, and management of tailings systems.

The ideal candidate is self-motivated with strong interpersonal and communication skills, capable of thriving in a technical team environment. You'll have opportunities to rotate through different sites in the valley, building valuable experience and relationships. This position offers excellent potential for career progression within our enterprise.

The role requires a degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering with at least 3 years of operational experience in the mining industry. You'll need to be eligible for EGBC registration and possess a valid Class 5 Driver's License.

Responsibilities For Tailings Engineer

  • Participate in and adhere to health and safety programs and policies
  • Mentor and guide junior engineers
  • Implement surveillance, inspection, monitoring, and maintenance plan
  • Provide updates to operating manuals and emergency response plans
  • Develop short and long-range plans for tailings and water management facilities
  • Develop and maintain site-wide mass balance for tailings deposition
  • Conduct monthly reconciliation of plans
  • Ensure regulatory compliance
  • Develop requirements for tailings equipment
  • Report on performance to site leadership
  • Develop deposit assessment programs
  • Coordinate with consultants and regulators
  • Develop and track budgets for tailings activities

Requirements For Tailings Engineer

  • Degree in Civil, Geotechnical, or Geological Engineering
  • Minimum 3 years operational experience in mining industry
  • Eligible for Engineers and Geoscientists of British Columbia registration
  • Experience working on project teams
  • Understanding of tailings behavior and technologies
  • Experience working with external specialists
  • Valid Class 5 Driver's License
