Description For Research Engineer

Google DeepMind is seeking a Research Engineer to join their Media Understanding team, focusing on advancing state-of-the-art research in Embedding/representation models within large language models. This role presents a unique opportunity to work on the Gemini embedding project, a top priority initiative aimed at developing the most powerful omnimodal embedding model for retrieval and agentic use cases across Google products.

The position involves working at the intersection of research and practical implementation, where you'll be responsible for developing and productionizing next-generation models for multimodal understanding. You'll collaborate with a diverse team of research/software engineers, research scientists, and machine learning experts to create solutions that will impact billions of users worldwide.

Key aspects of the role include building various agentic Gemini demos, enhancing serving infrastructure for scalability, and working closely with product teams to implement and improve models based on real-world feedback. The ideal candidate should have either a Ph.D. in Computer Science or related field, or significant industry experience with machine learning and AI implementations.

Responsibilities For Research Engineer

  • Conducting core research in computer vision, language understanding, multimodal models, and large scale AI models
  • Training and evaluating AI models for various product use cases
  • Implementing and adapting state of the art deep learning approaches
  • Collaborating with GDM and partner teams to build advanced models
  • Building agentic Gemini demos with Gemini embedding
  • Enhancing the serving stack for scalability
  • Working with PAs to adopt models and improving models with PA feedback

Requirements For Research Engineer

  • Ph.D. in Computer Science or related quantitative field, or B.S./M.S. with 5+ years of relevant experience
  • Experience in machine learning models and techniques
  • Ability to transform prototypes into scalable solutions
  • Research experience and publication record in top tier conferences
  • Experience with core software engineering and applied implementations of AI
  • Strong team collaboration skills
  • Experience with Google-scale infrastructure (preferred)
