Description For Data Center Engineer, Controls Engineering

Google's Data Center Engineering team is at the forefront of innovation in data center technology. As a Data Center Engineer specializing in Controls Engineering, you'll be part of a team that mirrors an R&D department, tackling complex challenges in power management and facility operations. The role involves working with the global controls team to maintain and innovate the Building Management System (BMS) and Electrical Power Monitoring System (EPMS).

You'll be responsible for troubleshooting, project management, and maintaining critical infrastructure systems. The position involves working with various components such as generators, UPS, electrical switchgear, power distribution units, variable frequency drives, automatic/static transfer switches, chillers, pumps, cooling towers, and heat exchangers. These systems interact through various communication protocols, with BMS controlling mechanical systems and EPMS monitoring electrical systems.

As part of the Technical Infrastructure team, you'll help build and maintain the architecture that powers Google's extensive product portfolio. The role requires a combination of technical expertise, innovation, and practical problem-solving skills. You'll work on ensuring compliance with codes and standards, developing infrastructure improvements, and serving as a controls engineering expert.

The position offers competitive compensation including a base salary range of $144,000-$211,000, plus bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits. Responsibilities For Data Center Engineer, Controls Engineering

  • Define data center system-level, product architecture and Research and Development, while helping to develop operations and maintenance procedures for systems/processes
  • Conduct engineering analysis and research designs and methods of data center equipment and facilities
  • Ensure designs and installations meet requirements (e.g., predicted cooling, structural, operational concerns, etc.)

Requirements For Data Center Engineer, Controls Engineering

Linux
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, or equivalent practical experience
  • 5 years of experience working on critical infrastructure projects related to process improvements
  • 4 years of experience with industrial controls in critical environments (e.g., data center, pharmaceutical, manufacturing, oil and gas, petrochemical)
  • 4 years of experience with Controls and Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Building Management System (BMS) controls for electrical project coordination
  • Experience writing control code and control system programming
  • Knowledge of digital and analog controls with BMS and EPMS
  • Knowledge of IT server and network system supporting data center services
