Description For Director, Engineering, Cloud Compute

Google Cloud Platform (GCP) is seeking a Director of Engineering for their Cloud Compute organization, specifically focusing on Google Compute Engine (GCE). This role sits at the heart of GCP's largest business generator, overseeing critical infrastructure that powers multiple services including virtual machines, databases, AI/ML, and more.

The position requires a seasoned leader with 15 years of software engineering experience, including 5 years managing managers. You'll be responsible for leading the GCE Control organization, which manages all major product interfaces including GUI, CLI, APIs, and various programming language libraries. The role combines technical expertise in distributed systems and UI design with strong leadership capabilities.

As Director, you'll build and lead globally distributed teams, working closely with Product Management, Go-to-Market leaders, and customers to shape strategic direction. The role offers an opportunity to impact cloud computing at scale, working with cutting-edge technology and driving innovation in cloud infrastructure.

The position offers a competitive compensation package ranging from $278,000 to $399,000, plus bonus, equity, and comprehensive benefits. You'll be joining Google's cloud division, which serves customers in over 200 countries, helping organizations accelerate their digital transformation journey.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 15 years of experience in software engineering
  • 5 years in a leadership role managing managers
  • Experience in frontend/GUI development, full stack development, and distributed systems
  • Experience growing and retaining talent
  • Familiarity with leveraging machine learning and AI models
  • Ability to develop partnerships with UX, PM, and backend engineering teams
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
