Description For Director, Engineering, Monarch

Monarch is Google's planet-scale time series database serving as the backbone for monitoring and alerting across Google's vast product ecosystem. As the Director of Engineering for Monarch, you'll lead the evolution of this critical infrastructure that handles massive volumes of time-series data, enabling real-time insights into the health, performance, and availability of major Google products from Search and YouTube to Google Cloud Platform services.

The role involves leading a transformation of Monarch to build a Gemini powered experience, working at the forefront of defining Google's monitoring future. You'll be responsible for owning the roadmap and driving execution in collaboration with engineers, SREs, and partner teams. The position requires deep technical expertise in distributed systems, databases, and observability, combined with strong leadership skills to manage teams across multiple locations.

  • Drive an architectural refresh of Monarch to improve reliability, scalability, and maintainability
  • Build a sustainable, scalable, and independent organization based on principled engineering practices
  • Lead a product engineering team that focuses on customer success
  • Work with decision makers and technical leaders across Google to formulate a strategic plan for monitoring

Requirements For Director, Engineering, Monarch

Kubernetes
  • 15 years of experience working with code, networking, and operating systems
  • 10 years of experience leading engineering teams
  • Experience scaling an organization across multiple sites, mentoring and developing managers
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure and distributed systems
  • Experience leading developer framework or developer tools engineering teams across multiple locations
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science, Mathematics, other relevant engineering discipline, or equivalent practical experience (preferred)
  • 15 years of experience in observability or equivalent (preferred)
  • 15 years of experience with databases, observability, and reliability engineering (preferred)
  • 15 years of experience leading and implementing engineering projects at an executive level (preferred)
  • Experience successfully producing software products and large-scale distributed systems (preferred)
