Description For Engineering Manager, AI Data

Google is seeking an Engineering Manager for their AI Data team to lead and drive innovation in machine learning model quality improvement. This role combines technical leadership with people management, requiring 8+ years of software development experience and 5+ years of leadership experience. The position involves leading a team focused on scaling Data Optimization techniques to enhance ML model performance, fairness, and quality.

The role is situated within Google Cloud, a division that's at the forefront of helping organizations worldwide with their digital transformation journey. As an Engineering Manager, you'll work closely with research teams and ML practitioners to develop and implement engineering tools, processing pipelines, and data optimization techniques. You'll be responsible for building and maintaining the infrastructure ecosystem that supports AI researchers and engineers.

The ideal candidate should have a strong technical background in software development, preferably with experience in Python, C++, Java, or JavaScript. A Master's or PhD in Computer Science or related field is preferred, along with experience in ML research and development workflows. The role requires someone comfortable working in a fast-paced, ambiguous environment while managing and developing a team of engineers.

Responsibilities For Engineering Manager, AI Data

  • Lead a team of Engineers that scale Data Optimisation techniques improving the performance, fairness, and quality of ML models
  • Work with Research teams as well as ML practitioners to identify, build, and iterate on engineering tools, processing pipelines, data optimization techniques, integration with existing workflows, user interfaces, and supporting users adoption
  • Build the infrastructure ecosystem to support AI researchers and engineers
  • Work in a fast-moving environment with ambiguity

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience
  • 8 years of experience with software development in one or more programming languages (e.g., Python, C, C++, Java, JavaScript)
  • 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role
  • 5 years of experience in people management/team leadership role
  • Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or related technical field (preferred)
  • Experience with ML research and development workflows (preferred)
  • Experience working with LM/Generative AI infrastructure (preferred)
  • 5 years of experience working in a changing organization (preferred)
