Description For Materials Engineer, Advanced Architecture

As a Materials Engineer in the Advanced Architecture team at Google, you will be part of a fast-paced, global, and multidisciplinary team focused on redefining the possibilities of surface finishes through advanced material science and engineering technology. You will research, develop, and evaluate innovative surface finishing techniques for groundbreaking product experiences, collaborating with various teams including Industrial Design, Product Design, Product Integrity, Operations, manufacturing partners, and external vendors.

Key responsibilities include:

  1. Creating and developing surface finishes and decoration roadmaps for future design and product development.
  2. Engaging with global materials suppliers on multiple projects, conducting material Design of Experiments (DOEs), analyzing test results, and selecting the best materials for applications.
  3. Leading the development of new surface finishes and treatments to mitigate risks and enhance the performance of systems relying on these materials.
  4. Traveling to provide on-site support for project trials and builds.

You will utilize your expertise in surface finishing materials to analyze and prototype innovative concepts, ensuring their feasibility and successful implementation in manufacturing. Your role will be crucial in mitigating risks, preventing failures, and enhancing the performance and aesthetics of products reliant on these finishes.

This position is part of Google's Devices & Services team, which combines the best of Google AI, Software, and Hardware to create radically helpful experiences for users. The team focuses on researching, designing, and developing new technologies and hardware to make user interactions with computing faster, seamless, and more powerful.

Requirements For Materials Engineer, Advanced Architecture

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • 5 years of experience with inks, coatings for polymeric or glass surface finishes
  • Experience in fundamental failure analysis methodology to derive a root cause of failure
  • Ability to take an idea from concept and see it through to production
  • Ability to work independently and be proactive
  • Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
