Description For Plant Engineer, Data Center Operations

Google's Data Center Operations team is seeking a Plant Engineer to join their Technical Infrastructure organization. This role is crucial in designing and operating some of the world's most sophisticated electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, and HVAC systems. As a Plant Engineer, you'll be responsible for operating, monitoring, and supporting physical facilities conditions in Google's data centers.

The position involves working with complex systems including heating and cooling of air and water, power supply, generators, UPS systems, electrical distribution, and control and monitoring systems. You'll conduct regular inspections, maintain and repair various data center systems, and work alongside senior technicians to read blueprints/schematics and assess system working order.

At Google, you'll be part of the Technical Infrastructure team that builds and maintains the architecture behind all of Google's user-facing products. The team takes pride in being the engineers' engineers, focusing on keeping networks running optimally to ensure the best and fastest user experience possible.

This role offers the opportunity to develop creative approaches to reducing operational costs while improving overall data center efficiency. You'll be responsible for ensuring environmental and safety standards are met, and managing data center performance issues and outages to minimize recovery time from failures.

Responsibilities For Plant Engineer, Data Center Operations

  • Provide effective shift leadership for successful critical system troubleshooting, unit commissioning, repairs/replacements
  • Operate critical plant equipment as authorized by facilities manager
  • Provide coordination/input for global facilities programs
  • Respond to critical data center events and alarms in accordance with Employee Resource Groups (ERGs) and be a point of escalation on operational issues

Requirements For Plant Engineer, Data Center Operations

Linux
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Design, Manufacturing, or equivalent practical experience
  • Experience in project and facilities management
  • Experience managing multiple projects with geographically dispersed, cross-functional stakeholders
  • English fluency required
