Description For Principal Engineer, BigQuery Storage and Lakes

BigQuery, Google's serverless data warehousing and analytics system, is seeking a Principal Engineer to lead their Storage and Lakes team. This role sits at the heart of BigQuery's innovation, focusing on storage tiering, caching, encoding, ingestion/compaction, partitioning, data lakes, and Apache Iceberg formats. The position offers an opportunity to shape the future of large-scale data storage and analytics, working with cutting-edge technology that serves the world's most demanding workloads.

The role combines technical leadership with strategic vision, requiring deep expertise in storage systems and data warehousing. You'll be instrumental in driving innovation across the BigQuery storage stack, working with teams across multiple locations to deliver exceptional storage and data lake solutions. The position demands both technical depth and leadership skills, as you'll be responsible for guiding early designs, accelerating project decisions, and maintaining technical oversight of execution.

As a Principal Engineer, you'll collaborate with engineering and product management teams to shape product direction, leveraging your expertise in storage systems, transaction processing, and open data formats. The role offers competitive compensation ($278,000-$399,000 + bonus + equity + benefits) and the opportunity to work with some of the industry's most challenging and impactful data problems.

This is an ideal position for a seasoned engineer with extensive experience in storage systems and technical leadership, who is passionate about solving complex problems at scale and driving innovation in the cloud data warehouse space. You'll be joining a team that pioneered the model of infinitely scalable, disaggregated storage among cloud data warehouses and continues to push the boundaries of what's possible in data analytics.
