Grafana Labs is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to join their Grafana Backend Services squad. This role is remote and open to candidates based in the U.S. or Canada. The ideal candidate will have strong experience with GoLang and a good understanding of relational databases.
The Grafana Backend Services squad is responsible for delivering the best Grafana service to both On-Prem and Cloud customers. This involves managing multiple components such as the Grafana Backend API, CLI tool, and the orchestration infrastructure required for the Cloud product.
Key responsibilities include:
- Developing new functionality and iterating on results
- Contributing to and reviewing design documents
- Embracing open-source culture and contributing to various projects
- Influencing the product roadmap
- Participating in on-call rotations
- Mentoring team members and collaborating on design discussions
- Sharing knowledge across technical domains
- Working closely with other Grafana Division squads
The ideal candidate will have:
- Solid experience with Go
- Strong understanding of relational databases (MySQL, SQLite, Postgres)
- A focus on developer and user experience
- Experience in project delivery from requirements gathering to shipping
- Ability to write clean, robust, and maintainable code
- Experience mentoring junior engineers in an asynchronous environment
- Enjoyment of complex problem-solving
- Skill in breaking down complex challenges and iterating on solutions
Additional valuable skills include experience with open-source software, Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD, DevOps, and familiarity with Grafana and Prometheus in operational roles.
Grafana Labs offers a competitive compensation package, including equity and potential bonuses. The base salary range for this position is $148,505 - $178,206, with actual compensation varying based on experience and skills.

- Work with your team to deliver new functionality, then use the results to iterate and improve
- Contributing to and reviewing design documents for upcoming features

- Be a part of your team's on-call rotations and take ownership of the services you're running
- Mentor and support other team members, participate in design discussions, and collaborate with the team
- Regularly sharing ideas and knowledge across a vast array of technical ideologies and mindsets
- Working closely with the other squads in the Grafana Division
Requirements For Senior Backend Engineer - Grafana Backend Services
- Have solid experience with Go
- Good understanding of storage solutions with an emphasis on relational databases like MySQL, SQLite, and Postgres
- Care deeply about developer and user experience and the quality of the products that you work on
- Have experience with delivering projects from gathering requirements, and brainstorming ideas to shipping a product to the customer's hands in a self-driven way
- Have experience writing clean, robust, and performant software that is easily maintained by others
- Have experience with mentoring junior engineers in a collaborative but asynchronous environment
- Enjoy working on complex solutions
- Can take on complex challenges and break them down to achieve tight learning loops: to analyze, design, and build modular solutions, deliver MVPs, gather data and feedback, and then progress iteratively
