Senior Staff AI Software Engineer

Gusto is hiring a Principal AI Software Engineer to build the future of the small business backoffice, powered by AI agents. This team operates as a startup-within-a-startup, reporting directly to Gusto's co-founder/Head of Technology. The mission is to build AI agents that make small business owners 10x more powerful.

Day-to-day responsibilities include:

• Building Gusto's agentic AI applications
• Imagining a world where the small business back office is made 10x more efficient through AI agents
• Working with Gusto's co-founder to ship code that turns this vision into reality
• Mentoring and providing guidance to other AI software engineers

Requirements:

• 15+ years of software development experience
• Expertise in Agentic AI, Machine Learning, and LLMs (considered an expert in this field)
• A startup/founder mindset – comfortable with ambiguity, risk-taking, and operating in a high-intensity environment
