The position involves working with a codebase of several million lines of code, focusing on ambitious improvements and long-term projects. Recent achievements include implementing filesystem-based routing, TypeScript performance optimization, and frontend separation from Ruby backend.

As a Frontend Architecture Engineer, you'll tackle complex challenges in making Gusto's codebase more effective at scale. Your responsibilities include owning problems beyond code, mentoring fellow engineers, and driving architectural decisions through ADRs. You'll be instrumental in improving development tooling and running critical migrations using both manual and automated approaches.

Responsibilities For Frontend Architecture Engineer

  • Own problems, not just code
  • Identify ways to make Gusto's codebase more effective at scale
  • Participate in thorough, rigorous discussions about how to measure and solve problems
  • Support, up-level, and mentor fellow engineers through Slack, pairing sessions, and presentations
  • Collaborate and communicate changes with the engineering org through ADRs
  • Integrate, add, build, and improve tooling to support Gusto's frontend development
  • Run migrations to improve Gusto's codebase
  • Enforce and promote patterns and practices through custom analysis

Requirements For Frontend Architecture Engineer

TypeScript
React
  • 8+ years of experience with software development and architecture
  • 5+ years of experience and in React and Typescript
  • Experience and/or interest in GraphQL, Ruby, Rails, architecture, developer tooling
  • Experience and/or interest in building tooling that makes engineering colleagues successful
  • Great communicator with ability to plan, document, consult, and collaborate effectively
