Sr. Staff Payroll Services Engineer

Gusto, a modern people platform serving over 400,000 businesses nationwide, is seeking a Sr. Staff Payroll Services Engineer to join their dynamic team. This role is pivotal in developing and scaling the core payroll systems that form the backbone of Gusto's services. The position offers a competitive salary range of $191,000-$265,000 depending on location, plus equity.

The role focuses on building and maintaining critical payroll infrastructure, working within highly complex domains of payroll, taxes, and compliance. As a Sr. Staff Engineer, you'll be responsible for guiding projects end-to-end, from initial feature specifications to implementation and maintenance. The position requires deep technical expertise in distributed systems and the ability to mentor other engineers while working on mission-critical software.

You'll be joining one of several specialized teams within Payroll Services, including Tax Accuracy, Ledger, Engine, or Platform teams, each focusing on crucial aspects of Gusto's payroll infrastructure. The work environment is collaborative, emphasizing test-driven development and cross-functional teamwork with Product Management, Design, Data Science, Compliance, and Operations teams.

The ideal candidate brings 12+ years of software development experience, with a strong background in building robust, distributed systems. Experience with Ruby on Rails, TypeScript, and React is preferred, as is knowledge of payroll, taxes, or compliance domains.
