Description For Research Scientist Intern, Computational Diffractive Optics (PhD)

Meta Reality Labs is seeking a Research Scientist Intern in Computational Diffractive Optics for a PhD-level position. The role involves collaborating with researchers and cross-functional partners to develop next-generation AR/VR displays, with a focus on advanced modeling and prototyping. The intern will explore novel solutions for AR/VR devices, applying knowledge in areas such as diffractive optics, polarization optics, and geometrical optics.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Collaborating with researchers and communicating research plans, progress, and results
  • Publishing research and contributing to product development
  • Developing advanced AR/VR displays through modeling and prototyping
  • Exploring novel solutions for AR/VR devices
  • Applying expertise in diffractive optics, polarization optics, or geometrical optics

Qualifications:

  • PhD candidate in Optical Science, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computational Science, or a related field
  • 2+ years experience in optical research (holography, diffractive optics, computational electromagnetics/photonics)
  • 2+ years hands-on experience with optical simulation algorithms (RCWA, FDTD, FEM, adjoint method, or similar)
  • Proficiency in Python, Matlab, or equivalent programming languages
  • Work authorization in the country of employment

Preferred qualifications include intent to return to a degree program after the internship, experience in cross-functional team environments, and a proven track record of achievements (grants, fellowships, patents, publications).

The internship offers competitive compensation ($7,313/month to $11,333/month + benefits) and can last 12 to 24 weeks with various start dates throughout the year. Responsibilities For Research Scientist Intern, Computational Diffractive Optics (PhD)

  • Collaborate with researchers and cross-functional partners including communicating research plans, progress, and results
  • Publish research results and contribute to research that can be applied to Meta product development
  • Develop next generation AR/VR displays with an emphasis on advanced modeling and prototyping to prove new concepts and understand the perceptual impact of those concepts
  • Collaborate with larger Meta RLR team to explore novel solution space for AR/VR devices
  • Explore the application of at least one of the following: diffractive optics, polarization optics, geometrical optics

Requirements For Research Scientist Intern, Computational Diffractive Optics (PhD)

Python
  • Currently has or is in the process of obtaining a Ph.D. degree in Optical Science, Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Physics, Computational Science or relevant technical field
  • Must obtain work authorization in country of employment at the time of hire and maintain ongoing work authorization during employment
  • 2+ years experience in at least one of the following areas of optical research: holography, diffractive optics, computational electromagnetics/photonics
  • 2+ years hands on experience with one of the following optical simulation algorithms: RCWA, FDTD, FEM, adjoint method, or similar
  • Familiarity with Python, Matlab or equivalent programming languages
