Description For Datacentre Engineering Mechanical Engineer

Microsoft Cloud Operations and Innovation (CO&I) is seeking a Datacentre Engineering Mechanical Engineer to join their team responsible for delivering core datacentre infrastructure. This role combines mechanical engineering expertise with cloud infrastructure development, focusing on the EMEA region. The position requires a deep understanding of datacentre HVAC systems, cooling equipment, and mechanical Building Automation Systems.

As a Subject Matter Expert, you'll be instrumental in developing Microsoft's industry-leading datacentre designs, working with global teams on complex, multi-disciplinary projects. The role involves collaborating with consulting firms, leading mechanical workgroups, and overseeing technical specifications for new datacentre builds.

The ideal candidate brings a strong background in mechanical engineering, with experience in large-scale, complex mechanical systems. You'll be responsible for reviewing and coordinating the delivery of sophisticated datacentre mechanical systems, while ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations.

This position offers the flexibility of up to 100% remote work, though some travel (0-25%) is required for factory witness testing, vendor interactions, and site visits. You'll be part of Microsoft's commitment to building sustainable, efficient datacentre infrastructure that powers the world's largest online services.

Responsibilities For Datacentre Engineering Mechanical Engineer

  • Collaborate with global and regional Mechanical/BAS teams on datacentre designs
  • Lead and direct consultants in mechanical systems design
  • Lead mechanical workgroups with consulting firms and stakeholders
  • Oversee specification and drawing development for mechanical systems
  • Interface with procurement team and manufacturers
  • Assist Operations teams with solutioning and implementation
  • Review mechanical infrastructure upgrading scope
  • Assist in commissioning validating performance, quality, and reliability
  • Provide technical direction to vendors
  • Work on lease portfolio, AI design, retrofits and upgrades

Requirements For Datacentre Engineering Mechanical Engineer

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering
  • Professional/Chartered Engineer in Mechanical Engineering
  • Experience in consulting engineering/construction/operation of large scale mechanical systems
  • Knowledge of HVAC cooling systems, plumbing systems, fire protection systems
  • Familiarity with CFD modelling
  • Knowledge of building codes and regulations
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally
  • Must pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check
