Microsoft Security is seeking a Principal Applied AI Engineer to join their Security AI Research team in a transformative role that combines cutting-edge AI innovation with cybersecurity. This position offers a unique opportunity to defend Microsoft and its customers through applied AI innovation, working at the intersection of security and artificial intelligence.

The role is situated within Microsoft's Security organization, which is dedicated to making the world a safer place by developing end-to-end security solutions. As a Principal Applied AI Engineer, you'll be responsible for developing novel AI methods, frameworks, and systems to enhance defensive and red teaming capabilities. You'll work with Microsoft's Threat Intelligence Center and Red Team, contributing to a unique knowledge graph that describes the relationship between risk, investigation, and response.

The position offers a competitive salary range of $137,600 - $294,000 (varying by location) and comes with comprehensive benefits including healthcare, educational resources, and parental leave. The role is remote-friendly with up to 100% work from home options, requiring 0-25% travel.

Key responsibilities include conducting cutting-edge research in defensive and red teaming AI capabilities, building scalable and secure systems, and collaborating with defenders, threat hunters, and other stakeholders. The ideal candidate will have 9+ years of experience with a Master's degree (or equivalent) and significant expertise in shipping large-scale ML/AI services, preferably in the security domain.

Responsibilities For Principal Applied AI Engineer

  • Review business and product requirements, incorporate research, and provide strategic direction for problem solving
  • Conduct cutting-edge research for defensive and red teaming AI capabilities
  • Work with defenders, threat hunters, PMs, researchers and engineers to turn research into effective solutions
  • Build scalable, reliable, and secure industry-leading systems with appropriate monitoring and alerting
  • Produce reliable and performant code and conduct design and code reviews

Requirements For Principal Applied AI Engineer

Python
  • Master's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field AND 9+ years related experience
  • 4+ years of experience in shipping large-scale ML/AI-based services or applications in security domain on cloud platforms
  • 4+ years of relevant industry experience driving cutting-edge research into real world impact
  • Must pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check
