Description For Principal Hardware Engineer

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is seeking a Principal Hardware Engineer to join the Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team. This role will be instrumental in developing and delivering custom hardware acceleration solutions for Azure, collaborating with internal teams and external partners to investigate opportunities using custom silicon and programmable hardware FPGAs. The ideal candidate will drive co-development of hardware and software, develop roadmaps, and refine solutions on ASIC and FPGA. They will also drive business considerations including Total Cost of Operation and Return on Investment for various solutions, and build consensus on sustainable acceleration strategies across teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Analyze performance and present results and insights to provide recommendations
  • Specify architecture and microarchitecture of accelerators on FPGA and custom silicon
  • Evaluate architecture trade-offs, performance, area, power, and complexity
  • Advise on project implementation schedules and anticipate issues
  • Write internal device specification sheets and influence future device specifications

Required Qualifications:

  • 12+ years of technical engineering experience OR
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 10+ years of technical engineering experience OR
  • Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 7+ years of technical engineering experience OR
  • Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 5+ years of technical engineering experience
  • 5+ years of experience with architecture and implementation of custom hardware accelerators and/or FPGAs

This role offers a competitive salary range of USD $161,600 - $286,200 per year (higher in San Francisco and New York City areas) and includes comprehensive benefits such as industry-leading healthcare, educational resources, savings and investments, parental leave, and generous time off.

Requirements For Principal Hardware Engineer

  • 5+ years of experience with architecture and implementation of custom hardware accelerators and/or FPGAs
  • Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Ability to analyze performance and present results and insights
  • Experience in specifying architecture and microarchitecture of accelerators on FPGA and custom silicon
  • Skill in evaluating architecture trade-offs, performance, area, power, and complexity
  • Ability to advise on project implementation schedules and anticipate issues
