Description For Principal Hardware Engineer

Microsoft's Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) team is seeking a Principal Hardware Engineer to join their Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team. This role is crucial in developing and delivering custom hardware acceleration solutions for Azure cloud infrastructure.

The position involves collaborating with internal Microsoft teams and external partners to investigate and implement custom silicon and FPGA solutions for cloud-scale applications. The successful candidate will drive the co-development of hardware platforms that are robust, scalable, and meet diverse customer needs. They will be responsible for evaluating architecture trade-offs, performance, area, power, and complexity considerations.

Key responsibilities include creating architecture solutions, analyzing performance metrics, specifying accelerator architectures, and providing technical leadership in hardware development. The role requires deep expertise in hardware engineering, with a focus on custom accelerators and FPGAs. The position offers a competitive salary range of $137,600 - $267,000 per year (varying by location) and comprehensive benefits.

Responsibilities For Principal Hardware Engineer

  • Create robust, scalable, secure, and extensible architecture solutions and verification plans
  • Analyze performance and present results and insights to provide recommendations
  • Specify the architecture and microarchitecture of accelerators on FPGA and custom silicon
  • Advise on project implementation schedules and anticipate project implementation issues
  • Write internal device specification sheets and influence future device specifications

Requirements For Principal Hardware Engineer

  • 10+ years of technical engineering experience or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 5+ years of experience with architecture and implementation of custom hardware accelerators and/or FPGAs
  • Bachelor's/Master's/Doctorate degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • Must pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check
  • Experience with hardware acceleration solutions and custom silicon development
