Description For Principal Hardware Engineer

Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) team is seeking a Principal Hardware Engineer to join their Cloud AI & Advanced Systems Engineering (CAASE) team. This role is crucial in developing and delivering custom hardware acceleration solutions for Azure cloud infrastructure. The position involves collaborating with internal Microsoft teams and external partners to investigate opportunities using custom silicon and programmable hardware FPGAs.

The ideal candidate will drive the co-development of hardware and software, develop roadmaps, and refine solutions on ASIC and FPGA platforms. They will be responsible for analyzing Total Cost of Operation and Return on Investment for various solutions while building consensus on sustainable acceleration strategies across teams.

Responsibilities For Principal Hardware Engineer

  • Analyze performance and present results and insights to provide recommendations
  • Specify architecture and microarchitecture of accelerators on FPGA and custom silicon
  • Evaluate architecture trade-offs, performance, area, power, and complexity
  • Advise on project implementation schedules and anticipate issues
  • Write internal device specification sheets and influence future device specifications

Requirements For Principal Hardware Engineer

  • 12+ years of technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's degree with 10+ years experience OR Master's degree with 7+ years experience OR PhD with 5+ years experience
  • Must pass Microsoft Cloud Background Check
  • 5+ years of experience with FPGA design and development
  • Experience in hardware acceleration solutions
  • Knowledge of ASIC and FPGA development
