Murmuration, a nonprofit organization, is seeking a Data Design Engineer to join their Research & Data Division. This role is crucial in developing data visualizations and user interfaces for Explorer, their newest research tool that makes civic data accessible for community organizations. The position combines data visualization expertise with frontend development skills to create intuitive, impactful tools that drive civic engagement. Working in a collaborative environment, the engineer will translate complex datasets into clear, actionable insights while ensuring accessibility and user-friendly experiences. Responsibilities For Data Design Engineer
- Design, develop, and maintain dynamic data visualizations and interfaces within Explorer
- Contribute to frontend development ensuring seamless user experience
- Collaborate with research engineers, data scientists, product managers, and designers
- Prototype and iterate on data visualization and UI concepts
- Design and maintain scalable, reusable data visualization components
- Support special projects including publishing insights and designing presentation materials
- Ensure accessibility and usability best practices
- Optimize frontend performance
- Stay current on latest trends in data visualization and frontend development
Requirements For Data Design Engineer
- 4+ years of experience in data visualization and frontend development
- Proficiency in React and Redux or similar frameworks
- Experience with data visualization libraries (e.g., Visx or D3.js)
- Experience translating complex datasets into visual stories
- Strong understanding of design principles
- Familiarity with data querying and transformation
- Knowledge of accessibility best practices
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail
- Proven track record of collaborating within small, agile teams
