Description For Data Engineer (L5) - Growth Insights and Foundations

Netflix is seeking a Data Engineer (L5) for their Growth Insights and Foundations team. This role involves building low-latency data products to power algorithms and machine learning models across commerce and identity flows. The ideal candidate should have strong skills in JVM languages, SQL, and experience with distributed systems. They should possess a product mindset, strong data intuition, and the ability to craft scalable systems. The role requires collaboration with various teams, a focus on observability, and alignment with Netflix's culture. The engineer will work on critical data availability to enhance customer experiences across product canvases for current and future Netflix members.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop highly available and reliable distributed data systems and services
  • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality data for use in Netflix products
  • Collaborate with data scientists and other engineers
  • Build applications using large-scale distributed systems and data processing frameworks
  • Design multi-tenant systems capable of handling high-scale and high-throughput demands
  • Implement comprehensive monitoring, logging, and alerting for proactive issue detection

Required Skills:

  • Proficiency in JVM languages (Java, Scala) and SQL
  • Experience with distributed systems, data processing frameworks (Spark, Flink)
  • Strong analytical skills and data engineering fundamentals
  • Knowledge of transport protocols and API/service building (Spring, gRPC)
  • Experience in supporting and maintaining 24x7 products
  • Strong operational awareness and system design skills
  • Passion for quality and ownership of built systems
  • Ability to work in agile environments with vague requirements
