Description For Firmware Engineer

OpenAI is seeking a Firmware Engineer to join their Compute team, focusing on supercomputer hardware systems development. This role combines cutting-edge deep learning with data center design, working on AI supercomputers and accelerator co-design. The position involves developing low-level firmware and software components, including BIOS, OpenBMC, and operating systems.

The role offers a competitive salary range of $360K-$530K with equity and comprehensive benefits. Based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model (3 days in office), the position includes relocation assistance. The successful candidate will work at the intersection of hardware and software, designing and implementing firmware solutions for complex computing systems.

Key responsibilities include firmware development, vendor management, system optimization, and cross-functional collaboration. Responsibilities For Firmware Engineer

  • Design, develop, and maintain firmware and low-level software for supercomputer hardware systems
  • Work with hardware design teams to define firmware requirements
  • Work with external vendors to review firmware designs
  • Develop and enhance OpenBMC firmware for system monitoring
  • Implement and optimize boot loaders, device drivers, debuggers, and profilers
  • Conduct debugging, testing, and validation of firmware and software
  • Participate in system-level power, thermal management, and fan control strategies
  • Drive innovation and optimization in firmware architecture
  • Interface with cross-functional teams
  • Assist in mass production readiness
  • Troubleshoot and resolve hardware-firmware boundary issues

Requirements For Firmware Engineer

Linux
  • Strong understanding of hardware interfaces and protocols (I2C, SPI, PCIe, USB)
  • Experience with embedded systems development
  • Experience managing vendor relationships
  • Proficiency with firmware development for server applications
  • Familiarity with secure boot methods and firmware security protocols
  • Insight into low-level performance counters and profilers
  • Experience with ASIC integration and large-scale system deployments
  • Experience with version control systems and continuous integration
  • Knowledge of power management techniques and system monitoring in HPC environments
