OpenAI is seeking a Research Engineer/Scientist to join their Computer-Using Agent team, focusing on developing and ensuring the safety of AI agents that operate graphical user interfaces. This role combines cutting-edge research with practical implementation, working on OpenAI's Operator product. The position offers a competitive salary range of $295K–$530K plus equity and comprehensive benefits.
The role involves tackling unique safety challenges in computer-using agents, developing innovative machine learning techniques, and collaborating with cross-functional teams. You'll work in a hybrid environment (3 days in office) in San Francisco, contributing to OpenAI's mission of ensuring AI benefits humanity.

Responsibilities For Research Engineer / Research Scientist - Agent Safety - Computer Using Agent
- Identify open challenges for safely deploying practical computer-using agents
- Own and pursue a research agenda to measure and improve model's safety related capabilities and their reliability
- Design, implement, test, and debug code across our research stack
Requirements For Research Engineer / Research Scientist - Agent Safety - Computer Using Agent
- Strong background in multimodal web agents, computer-using agents, relevant large-scale reinforcement learning or agentic safety research
- Experience in AI safety, especially in areas like RLHF, adversarial training, robustness, fairness & biases
- Strong engineering skills in designing and optimizing large-scale machine learning systems
- Experience working in complex technical environments
