OpenAI is seeking a Research Engineer/Scientist for their Deep Research team, responsible for building models that power Deep Research capability and future agentic offerings. This role combines ML engineering and research to improve model capabilities, working closely with product teams to develop new agentic capabilities, create evaluations, and pursue algorithmic improvements. Based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model (3 days in office), the position offers competitive compensation ($360K-$530K plus equity) and comprehensive benefits. The ideal candidate will have strong ML engineering skills, research experience, and product development interest. The role involves owning research agendas, building evaluations, and collaborating across teams. Responsibilities For Research Engineer / Research Scientist - Deep Research
- Own and pursue a research agenda to improve model capability and performance
- Build robust evaluations for tracking modeling improvements
- Design, implement, test, and debug code across our research stack
- Collaborate closely with the other research and product / applied teams
Requirements For Research Engineer / Research Scientist - Deep Research
- Deep understanding of machine learning and machine learning applications
- Self-starter who takes initiative and ownership of ideas
- Comfortable diving into a large ML codebase to debug and improve it
- Experience with product-focused research projects
- Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, dynamic environment
- Strong technical skills in machine learning engineering
