OpenAI is seeking a Research Engineer/Scientist to join their Post-Training and Frontier Product Research team. This role combines cutting-edge AI research with practical product development, focusing on training state-of-the-art models and developing novel research methods. The position offers a competitive salary range of $295K-$530K plus equity and comprehensive benefits.
The role involves working on creative breakthroughs, crafting model behavior, and designing evaluations for next-generation AI products. You'll be part of a team that has delivered impressive projects like ChatGPT Canvas, SearchGPT, and streaming summarized chain-of-thoughts. The work environment is hybrid, requiring 3 days in the office per week in San Francisco.
Key responsibilities include training SOTA models, designing challenging evaluations, developing scalable synthetic data techniques, and collaborating across product, design, and engineering teams. The ideal candidate should have strong Python skills, experience with machine learning frameworks like PyTorch, and the ability to lead ambitious projects.

Responsibilities For Research Engineer / Research Scientist, Post-Training, Frontier Product Research
- Train SOTA models and improve core capabilities like coding and creative reasoning
- Design challenging evaluations for novel capabilities, construct RL environments
- Develop scalable synthetic data techniques in RL and study them
- Train models and run scientific experiments
- Iterate on research experiments, clearly communicating insights to the team
- Integrate core behaviors into the next gen frontier models
- Co-creating novel product surfaces and interaction paradigms
- Collaborate with product, design, and engineering teams
Requirements For Research Engineer / Research Scientist, Post-Training, Frontier Product Research
- Strong technical background
- Highly skilled in Python
- Capable of leading ambitious projects
