Research Engineer / Scientist, Retrieval

OpenAI is seeking a Research Engineer/Scientist specializing in Retrieval to join their post-training team. This role is crucial in developing retrieval technology for ChatGPT and new product experiences. The position goes beyond traditional RAG implementation, focusing on reimagining information retrieval for AI systems from first principles. The team works at the intersection of LLMs, retrieval, reinforcement learning, and deep learning.

The role offers a competitive compensation package of $295K–$530K plus equity and comprehensive benefits. Based in San Francisco with a hybrid work model (3 days in office), the position includes relocation assistance. The post-training team is responsible for improving pre-trained models for ChatGPT, API, and internal research teams.

As a Research Engineer/Scientist, you'll drive research initiatives to enhance model capabilities, collaborate across teams, develop robust evaluation systems, and work with complex ML codebases. The ideal candidate should have strong ML engineering skills, research experience with advanced models, and expertise in retrieval systems.
