Description For Software Engineer, Privacy

The Privacy Team at OpenAI is seeking a Software Engineer with experience in developing secure backend systems that prioritize customer data protection. This role is ideal for someone deeply committed to the intersection of product development, security, and privacy.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Designing and implementing back-end systems for privacy and security functions in API products and consumer applications
  • Conducting threat modeling, privacy design reviews, and code-level assessments
  • Collaborating with product managers and other engineering teams on new product development
  • Working with the legal team on compliance practices and internal audits
  • Participating in privacy incident response efforts

The ideal candidate should have:

  • Substantial experience in building and re-engineering production systems for legal requirements, scale, and privacy/security standards
  • Leadership or significant contribution to security projects with cross-functional collaboration
  • Strong focus on user experience and product development with threat modeling and regulatory compliance experience
  • Humble attitude, strong communication skills, and eagerness to support colleagues
  • Ability to take ownership of problems from start to finish

This role is based in San Francisco, CA, with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. OpenAI offers relocation assistance to new employees.
