Software Engineer, Real Time

OpenAI is seeking a Software Engineer specializing in Real Time systems to join their Applied AI department. This role is crucial in scaling existing systems and building next-generation infrastructure to enable a new class of products. The ideal candidate should be comfortable with full-stack development and have significant experience with Real-Time Communication (RTC) systems in production.

The Engineering team at OpenAI manages a massive fleet of GPUs with scalable, robust infrastructure powered by cutting-edge technologies. As a Software Engineer in this role, you'll be working on systems that power some of the most advanced products in the market, including ChatGPT and the OpenAI API.

Key responsibilities include:

• Designing and building development and production platforms
• Partnering with cross-functional teams to bring new features and research capabilities to the world
• Accelerating engineering productivity through excellent tooling and systems
• Contributing to a diverse and inclusive culture
• Providing operational support for globally deployed systems, including on-call rotations

The ideal candidate should have:

• Significant experience building and scaling production systems
• Expertise in real-time communication products and systems (audio/video calling, WebRTC, encoding/decoding, signaling, lip sync)
• A strong focus on user experience
• A humble attitude and willingness to help colleagues
• End-to-end problem-solving skills
• Startup or early-stage engineering experience (preferred)
• Machine Learning experience (a plus, but not required)
