Description For Software Engineer, Uber Tech Lead, Human Data

OpenAI is seeking a Software Engineer to serve as the Uber Tech Lead for their Human Data team, a core part of the Research organization. This role offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of AI technology by leading the development of critical data solutions that drive groundbreaking research and enhance flagship products like ChatGPT, GPT-4o, and Sora.

As the technical lead, you'll be at the forefront of creating custom data solutions that are essential for training and evaluating OpenAI's cutting-edge AI models. You'll architect and build the production-quality platform necessary to generate data at scale, covering various modalities and sources. Your work will directly impact the development of AI systems that aim to benefit humanity.

In this role, you'll collaborate closely with product managers, researchers, and engineers to create innovative products and platforms around emerging research capabilities. You'll be responsible for designing and implementing tooling, infrastructure, and evaluation systems that power OpenAI's data collection and management platform. This includes capturing important training signals from products like ChatGPT, Dall-E, and Sora, as well as developing key interfaces used by AI human labelers.

Your expertise will be crucial in iterating rapidly to improve both user and developer experiences while advancing the scalability, performance, observability, and security of the systems. You'll need to understand the training and evaluation data needs across all of OpenAI, identify research opportunities to enhance the platform, and help develop the technical roadmap and prioritization strategies.

As a leader, you'll mentor other senior engineers and technical leads, especially in building scalable systems, creating optimal tools to serve customers, and managing prioritization and strategy. You'll be responsible for driving high-leverage projects, ensuring team engagement, resolving technical and organizational blockers, and delivering key milestones.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience as a technical lead in a larger organization, capable of leading teams of 20-40+ engineers or multiple engineering groups concurrently. You should have a proven track record of building and scaling production systems to deliver new product capabilities. A deep care for end-user experience, a passion for partnering with researchers, and a humble attitude are essential qualities for success in this role.

This position offers a competitive salary range of $385K – $465K, along with generous equity and benefits. The role is based in San Francisco, CA, with a hybrid work model of 3 days in the office per week. Join OpenAI in their mission to ensure that general-purpose artificial intelligence benefits all of humanity, and be part of shaping the future of technology in a thoughtful and impactful way.
