The position requires a seasoned professional who can work independently to plan, direct, and implement comprehensive EH&S functions across the organization. You'll be responsible for ensuring a safe, healthy, and incident-free workplace for all employees, contractors, and visitors. The role combines strategic planning with hands-on implementation, requiring both leadership skills and technical expertise.
As the Principal EH&S Engineer, you'll lead a team of specialists and technicians, collaborate with various departments, and interface with regulatory agencies. You'll be responsible for developing and maintaining critical safety programs, conducting investigations, managing metrics, and ensuring compliance with multiple regulatory bodies including OSHA, FDA, and local authorities.
The ideal candidate brings a strong educational background in occupational safety and health or engineering, coupled with extensive experience in the field. You'll need at least one professional certification (such as CSP, CIH, or similar) and demonstrated success in team leadership. Experience in the medical device, pharmaceutical, or biotech industry is highly valued.

Responsibilities For Principal Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Engineer
- Lead EH&S team of specialists and technicians
- Establish and engage EH&S program champions
- Create and maintain training matrices
- Generate and present safety training content
- Lead incident investigations and develop corrective actions
- Manage EH&S metrics collection, analysis, and communication
- Track environmental data and submit reports
- Maintain compliance with CAL-OSHA, Fed-OSHA, FDA, and local authorities
- Select, manage, train, and develop staff
- Work with HR on workers' compensation matters
Requirements For Principal Environmental Health & Safety (EH&S) Engineer
- Bachelor's degree in occupational safety and health, engineering, or related field with 8+ years of experience
- At least one EH&S specific certification (CSP, CIH, CPE, CEES, CIE, CHHM, or similar)
- 3+ years of experience supervising and leading a small team
- Strong knowledge of California's OSHA general industry safety orders
- Strong oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills
- Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
- Ability to work on site with 10-20% business travel
- Medical device, pharmaceutical, biotech, or regulated industry experience desired
