Our long-term vision is to create humanity's industrial base on Mars, starting with rocket manufacturing and launches here on Earth.

As a Staff Mechanical Design Engineer for Tooling, you'll be part of the Manufacturing team, working on Terran R, our next-generation, fully reusable rocket. Your role will involve developing high-quality tooling for vehicle and engine programs, integrating mechanical design principles across various projects, and collaborating closely with component designers and engineers.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Developing production tooling for Terran vehicle and Aeon engine programs
  • Applying sound design and drafting standards in creating tooling drawings
  • Handling a wide range of technical problems related to material handling, assembly fixtures, and custom machines
  • Collaborating with various teams to achieve optimal metrics in safety, cost, quality, and efficiency
  • Managing projects from vendor selection to equipment installation

We're looking for someone with:

  • A Bachelor's degree in manufacturing or mechanical engineering
  • 10+ years of experience in designing, building, and commissioning tooling for manufacturing
  • Proficiency in CAD and FEA-based analysis software (NX and ANSYS Workbench preferred)
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, materials, and GD&T

Responsibilities For Staff Mechanical Design Engineer, Tooling

  • Develop high quality development and production tooling for the Terran vehicle and Aeon engine programs
  • Integrate concepts and principles of mechanical design and analysis of several different projects in a fast-paced environment
  • Interpret and apply sound design and drafting standards (ASME Y14.5) in creating tooling drawing definitions
  • Handle a wide range of technical problems and be familiar with all types of material handling, assembly fixtures, off-loaders, rotisseries, test fixtures, structural weldments, environmental chambers, and custom machines
  • Collaborate closely with component designers, manufacturing engineers, and integration engineering
  • Manage projects including vendor selection, fabrication, inspection, equipment installation, and commissioning of tooling

Requirements For Staff Mechanical Design Engineer, Tooling

  • Bachelor of Science degree in manufacturing engineering, mechanical engineering or equivalent
  • 10+ years of work or project experience with design, build, and commissioning of tooling and fixtures for manufacturing, assembly and test
  • Experience using CAD and FEA-based analysis software (NX and ANSYS Workbench preferred) for structural applications
