Description For Automation Design Engineer, Consumer Hardware (Starlink)

SpaceX, founded with the vision of making humanity a multi-planetary species, is at the forefront of space technology development. As part of their Starlink initiative, which is currently providing fast, reliable internet to over 4 million users worldwide, they are seeking an Automation Design Engineer to join their Consumer Hardware team. This role combines mechanical engineering, electrical systems, and industrial software expertise to develop automated manufacturing solutions for Starlink's consumer electronics production.

The position is based in Bastrop, TX, where you'll work on creating innovative, high-rate factories that produce consumer electronics at scale. You'll be part of a team that keeps all engineering and production in-house, enabling quick iteration and decision-making. The role requires a unique blend of creative problem-solving and technical expertise in automation systems, including PLC programming, robotics, and safety compliance.

As an Automation Design Engineer, you'll lead multi-disciplinary projects that span machine design, robotics, motion systems, and factory health monitoring. Responsibilities For Automation Design Engineer, Consumer Hardware (Starlink)

  • Design, develop, and manage automation projects including factory ideation, machine commissioning and proof of rate capability
  • Architect, write, and debug PLC code for high-volume manufacturing applications
  • Implement ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant systems for robots, gantries, conveyors, and manufacturing equipment
  • Generate HMI screens for machine operation and troubleshooting
  • Design electrical systems compliant to NEC, NFPA, & UL508A regulations
  • Create and manage schedules and budgets

Requirements For Automation Design Engineer, Consumer Hardware (Starlink)

Python
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or computer science
  • Experience with machine design focusing on speed, reliability, and safety
  • Knowledge of motion system sizing and implementation
  • Proficiency in CAD and product lifecycle management programs
  • Experience with PLC programming, preferably Beckhoff TwinCAT
  • Knowledge of industrial software applications and robotics programming
  • Understanding of electrical systems and safety standards
