Description For Aviation Mechanical Engineer (Starshield)

SpaceX, founded with the vision of exploring the stars, is seeking an Aviation Mechanical Engineer for their Starshield project. Starshield leverages SpaceX's Starlink technology and launch capability to support national security efforts, focusing on earth observation, communications, and hosted payloads.

As an Aviation Mechanical Engineer, you'll join a brilliant team to own the design, qualification, testing, production, integration, and in-flight success of flight hardware. This role requires strong technical, design, and analysis skills, along with the drive to complete projects and coordinate closely with electrical teams.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Owning hardware from concept to production and in-flight operations
  • Developing design criteria and driving system-level optimization
  • Rapidly iterating on designs and analysis for high-level systems trades
  • Focusing on DFM for elegant designs with reduced part counts and error-proofing
  • Generating detailed production drawings and performing tolerance analysis
  • Establishing efficient product lifecycles balancing cost, complexity, and quality
  • Conducting environmental and performance testing
  • Owning product delivery timelines through all stages
  • Demonstrating extreme ownership of product outcomes

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or STEM
  • Experience with CAD or FEA software
  • 1+ years of mechanical/electromechanical design experience

Preferred skills:

  • Master's degree in engineering or related field
  • Ability to obtain Top Secret clearance
  • Understanding of GD&T and structural analysis
  • Experience with complex projects outside classroom settings
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD (NX preferred)
