SpaceX, at the forefront of space exploration and satellite technology, is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer for their Starlink program. This role combines mechanical engineering, automation, and controls expertise to develop manufacturing solutions for consumer electronics production at scale. The position is based in their Hawthorne and Austin facilities, where you'll be part of a team developing sophisticated factory solutions for producing Starlink equipment.

The role involves leading creative, multi-disciplinary projects spanning machine design, robotics, motion systems, and factory health monitoring. You'll be responsible for developing automation solutions that help manufacture the components of the world's largest satellite constellation, which currently serves over 4M+ users worldwide with high-speed internet.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you'll work on projects from initial factory ideation through machine commissioning, ensuring compliance with safety standards while maintaining high production rates. The position requires expertise in mechanical design, electrical systems, and industrial software, with a focus on creating simple yet effective solutions for complex manufacturing challenges.

Responsibilities For Mechanical Design Engineer, Automation Development (Starlink)

  • Design, develop, and manage automation projects including factory ideation, machine commissioning and proof of rate capability
  • Architect, write, and debug PLC code for high-volume manufacturing applications
  • Implement ANSI/RIA15.06/OSHA compliant systems for robots, gantries, conveyors, and manufacturing equipment
  • Generate HMI screens for machine operation and troubleshooting
  • Design electrical systems compliant to NEC, NFPA, & UL508A regulations
  • Create and manage schedules and budgets

Requirements For Mechanical Design Engineer, Automation Development (Starlink)

Linux
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or computer science
  • Experience with machine design focusing on speed, reliability, maintainability, and safety
  • Knowledge of motion system sizing and implementation
  • Experience with CAD and product lifecycle management programs
  • Proficiency in electrical systems design and troubleshooting
  • Experience with PLC programming, preferably Beckhoff TwinCAT
  • Must be eligible under ITAR requirements
  • Ability to work long hours and weekends as necessary
