Description For Mechanical Design Engineer, Sensors (Avionics)

SpaceX is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer, Sensors (Avionics) to join their sensors development team. This team is responsible for designing, testing, and manufacturing high-performance electronic sensors for the world's most advanced launch vehicles and spacecraft. The role involves end-to-end development of application-specific sensor products to support critical rocket and spacecraft operations, systems, and control loops including propulsion, guidance, navigation, control, and environmental systems.

Responsibilities include:

  • Developing innovative sensor designs and/or packages for physical sensors such as pressure, acceleration, rotation, flow, etc.
  • Building analytical and finite element thermal, structural, and fatigue models
  • Creating 3D models, production 2D drawings, and completing tolerance analysis
  • Conducting failure analysis of components related to thermal loads, vibration, and shock
  • Interfacing with machine shops and production teams to ensure final designs can be produced following overall project goals

The ideal candidate should have a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or aerospace engineering, with at least 1 year of hands-on experience designing and working with sensors. Preferred skills include 3+ years of experience in sensor design or optics, knowledge of fundamental sensing mechanisms, experience with PCB packaging, exposure to high volume production designs, and familiarity with manufacturing processes.
