Description For Sr. Software Engineer, GNC Simulations (Starlink)

SpaceX is seeking a Sr. Simulation Software Engineer for the Starlink GNC team. This role involves developing and maintaining an in-house vehicle dynamics simulator, as well as related infrastructure for dispersed Monte Carlo simulations, hardware-in-the-loop (HITL) simulations, and GNC-specific data visualization. The successful candidate will be a key figure in owning core simulation infrastructure and collaborating on building models to accurately represent multi-body physics, environmental perturbations, and vehicle power/propulsion/control hardware. This high-impact role requires working across engineering groups to build high-fidelity simulations used to develop cutting-edge software and hardware. SpaceX is looking for smart, motivated software engineers who enjoy taking on complex challenges, work well in dynamic environments, and care about software best practices.

Responsibilities include:

  • Maintaining and improving the in-house simulator for Starlink
  • Maintaining and enhancing the SpaceX GNC Monte Carlo simulation infrastructure for Starlink
  • Collaborating with simulation software users to develop new features and models, and improve user experience
  • Improving reliability and performance of simulation software through continuous integration, profiling, etc.

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, engineering, math, or STEM discipline and 5+ years of experience in software development; OR 7+ years of professional experience in software development in lieu of a degree
  • 2+ years development experience in C/C++
  • Professional experience developing/maintaining simulation software

Preferred Skills and Experience:

  • Strong proficiency in C++, Python, and front-end skills (e.g., JavaScript)
  • Strong Physics background
  • Excellent software design and development skills
  • Thorough knowledge of physics and math
  • Strong skills in debugging, performance optimization, and unit testing
  • Creative approach to problem-solving
  • Ability to work effectively in a dynamic environment with changing needs and requirements
  • Ability to work independently and in a team, take initiative, and communicate effectively

Additional Requirements:

  • Willingness to work extended hours and weekends when needed
  • Must meet ITAR requirements: U.S. citizen, U.S. lawful permanent resident, Refugee under 8 U.S.C. § 1157, or Asylee under 8 U.S.C. § 1158, or eligible to obtain required authorizations from the U.S. Department of State

This role offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package, including potential for long-term incentives, bonuses, and stock options. SpaceX is an Equal Opportunity Employer committed to diversity and inclusion.
